Burdick and Edwards Homer in Jumbo Shrimp's 13-7 Win over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (www.sportsdayjax.com) – Peyton Burdick and Xavier Edwards homered while the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp clubbed a season-high 22 hits in their 13-7 win over the Memphis Redbirds Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

Jacksonville (49-57, 17-15) sent 10 men to hit in the second inning against Memphis (54-53, 15-17) starter Sem Robberse (L, 0-1). With one out, Jerar Encarnacion drew a walk and two batters later, Brian Miller singled. Edwards knocked a base hit, scoring Encarnacion to break the tie, 2-1. 


Miller went to third and then scored on a single by Garrett Hampson, increasing the lead to 3-1. Edwards advanced to third and scored on a single by Dane Myers to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 4-1 advantage. Troy Johnson reached on a fielding error and Hampson scored from third to make the score 5-1. Burdick followed with an RBI single, the fifth two-out hit of the inning to put Jacksonville ahead 6-1.

 

The lead continued to grow for the Jumbo Shrimp in the fourth. Edwards (4) led off with his fourth homer of the year, pushing the lead to 7-1. Hampson singled in the ensuing at-bat and Myers walked. Johnston was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hampson was thrown out at home as Burdick reached on a fielder’s choice and Jordan Groshans knocked an RBI single to make it a seven-run game, 8-1.

 

The Jumbo Shrimp added one run in the top of the fifth. Miller knocked his second base hit and went to third on Edwards’ fourth hit of the day. Two batters later, Myers swatted a single to give Jacksonville a 9-1 lead.

 

Memphis got their bats going in the fifth against Jumbo Shrimp starter Emanuel De Jesus (W, 4-3). Richie Palacios was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He went to second on a ground out by Cesar PrietoMasyn Winn singled to put runners on the corners and Luken Baker hit a sac fly to cut the deficit to 9-2. Winn stole second during the next at-bat and scored on a base hit from Ivan Herrera to make it a six-run game.

 

The Redbirds drew closer in the seventh with three runs. Prieto drew a leadoff walk and with two outs, Herrera walked. With two runners on, Juan Yepez tripled home both runs to make the score 9-5. Moises Gomez brought in Yepez with a base hit cutting Jacksonville’s lead to 9-6.

 

In the top of the ninth, the Jumbo Shrimp woke their bats up, extending the lead. Edwards singled with one out and Hampson followed with a base knock. With runners at the corners, Myers smacked a single to plate Edwards giving Jacksonville a 10-6 lead. Hampson went to third on Myers’ single and with two outs, Burdick (21) blasted a three-run homer pushing the lead up to seven, 13-6.

 

Memphis’ final run came with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Baker (29) crushed a solo home run to make the score 13-7.

 

The Jumbo Shrimp took the initial lead in the top of the first. Edwards and Hampson started the inning with consecutive singles. Myers walked to load the bases and Edwards scored the first run of the game on Johnston’s double-play ground out.

 

The Redbirds evened the score in the bottom of the first. With one out, Prieto walked and Winn singled. With runners on first and second, Baker reached on a throwing error, that allowed Prieto to score from second, tying the game at one.

 

Jacksonville and Memphis conclude their series Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET at AutoZone Park. RHP Edward Cabrera (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start for Jacksonville and RHP Michael McGreevy (7-2, 3.83ERA) starts for Memphis.
