Moeller: Walker and Hines-Allen Can Lead Jaguars to AFC South Title and Beyond

Image
By Jeff Moeller, Florida Sports Wire  The Jags made it perfectly clear. They recently extended Travon Walker on a four-year, $110 million deal Walker's deal is for four-years and is worth $110 million total. It will make him $27.5 million annually, including $77 million in guarantees, $50 million of which was fully guaranteed at the signing.  A year earlier, they extended Josh Hines- Allen on a five-year, $141.25 million extension,  locking him in through the 2028 season. The deal includes $88 million in total guarantees and an average annual value of $28.25 million.  Through 2028 - the year their new stadium will open- the Jags’ defense will run through Walker and Hines-Allen. Walker was the subject of trade rumors, as he was inconsistent last season with 3.5 sacks. He had a combined 20. 5 the previous two seasons and appeared ready to make a huge impact.  Hines-Allen led the league in sacks with 17.5 in 2023 and consequently received his pay day. However, the ...

Moeller: With Record Performance, Lawrence Ready To Fulfill Generational Promise

At halftime, the song “ Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” was blaring on the loud speaker at EverBank Stadium.  It should have been “Trevor Lawrence Is Coming to Town.” The fifth-year quarterback, initially viewed as a generational talent, apparently has finally arrived.  Over the last month, Lawrence arguably has been one of the league’s best. And, for the Jaguars, he has placed them among the elite with an overall 10-4 record and the third seed in the AFC playoff race. Lawrence put on a clinic Sunday afternoon at the Bank in the Jaguars’ convincing 48-20 victory over the Jets in a game that was not even as close as the 28-point deficit. Lawrence sliced and diced a shoddy Jets’ defense, completing 20 of 32 attempts for 330 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes. Lawrence wasn’t sacked and hit only twice in spite of not having left tackle Walker Little. Backup Cole Van Lanan helped the offensive line to not miss a beat.   This arguably was Lawrence’s fines...

Moeller: For the Jaguars, It's All About Consistency

Consistency. Where you’re 6-4 after 10 games, you’re there, but you’re not quite there. With seven games to play beginning in Arizona Sunday, the Jags seemingly have all the pieces in play. But it’s about being consistent. It has been an  overriding theme for the Jaguars’ season, even with their recent 35-6 lopsided victory over the Chargers in which they flexed their muscles on both sides of the ball. Against Los Angeles, the Jags played well overall on both sides of the ball. Yet, there were still some lingering effects that have plagued them. Trevor Lawrence threw another bad first-half interception, but he rebounded with a pedestrian 14 of 22 for 153 yards. Lawrence still needs to improve on his 59.8 completion percentage, which ranks him 33rd among 37 quarterbacks who have started this season through 10 games. He has thrown an interception in his last three games , and in four of his last six.  Lawrence also has an unimpressive 11 to 8 touchdown to interception rat...

Moeller: Jaguars Need To Exorcise Houston's Past Demons Sunday in Texas

The Jaguars have to exorcise those Houston' nightmares of the past.   They need to take an early stance against a struggling 3-5 Texans' team that did manage to take Denver down to the wire last week. Playing in Houston won't be easy. The Houston Texans were once a thorn in the side of the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Houston had won seven straight games in Jacksonville, and they led the overall series in dominating fashion, 31-15. That was until Sept. 21 when the Jags posted a 17-10 victory at the Bank. It was the end of a  streak that saw the Jags usually come out flat against the Texans. Now, the Jags have to win in Houston Sunday. They lost last year, 24-20, in the Lone Star state, but previously posted victories there in 2022 and 2023. A playoff berth isn't out of the question in their foreseeable future. Playoffs? No, it’s not too early and you can't take anything for granted.  This Sunday suddenly looms as a must-win situation for them. At 5-3, they currently...

Moeller: WIth Loss To Rams, Coen's and Jags' Honeymoon Period is Over

Image
Photo Courtesy LA Rams By Jeff Moeller, Florida Sports Wire For Liam Coen, the honeymoon is officially over. It appeared to end prematurely last week when the Jaguars overall looked flat on a home loss to the Seahawks, who most of the football world didn’t take seriously despite having Sam Darnold and their 4-1 record.  Yet, there was redemption ahead in a trip to London despite playing the 4-2 Rams. This time around, though, London wasn’t calling for them. Instead, they suffered another clunker in a 35-7 loss that wasn’t even as close as that. The 35 points were the most allowed by new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile’s unit that once led the league in takeaways. Now, Coen has to deal with his first problem. If the Jags had a reality check last week against the Seahawks, this was a real awakening against the Rams. The Jags’ offense that hasn’t  been hitting on all cylinders, but still  getting some good mileage, needs a tuneup. That issue centered around Trevor La...

Moeller: Jaguars Can't Afford Another Reality Check

Image
By Jeff Moeller, Florida Sports Wire JACKSONVILLE - There was that feeling. It wasn’t the anticipated atmosphere at EverBank Stadium for a 4-1 Jaguars team that has the chance to move to 5-1 for the first time since 1999. There wasn’t the buzz you might have expected for a team that already looked postseason bound, and there was a good share of empty seats among the announced tickets distributed crowd of over 61,000. It was the same type of an electric playoff atmosphere of the Chiefs’ win last Monday night. Instead, it was a Chiefs’ hangover. You had the feeling the Jaguars would have a clunker like they have had at the start of the season the past several years. Unfortunately, for the most part of Sunday afternoon’s 20-12 loss to the Seahawks, it was. This was a reality check for the Jaguars, and a reminder that you have to show up on both sides the ball. It was an afternoon lost mainly on the offensive line that allowed seven sacks and 17 quarterbacks hits and 20 press...
