Jacksonville Alumnus Roa Makes MLB Debut for Marlins

  JACKSONVILLE – Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-handed pitcher Christian Roa made his major league debut on Saturday for the Miami Marlins at loadDepot park in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Roa entered the game in the eighth inning of the Marlins’ 4-2 loss. He struck out the first batter he faced, J.T. Realmuto, en route to 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts against one walk and one hit allowed. Prior to his promotion, the 26-year-old right-hander ranked third in the International League with 47 appearances for Triple-A Jacksonville. He was 9-2 with a 2.83 ERA, yielding only 35 hits in 57.1 innings with 61 strikeouts against 28 walks. A native of Houston, Roa was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 2020 draft out of Texas A&M. He had pitched as high as Triple-A Louisville in both 2023 and 2024. Jumbo Shrimp Comeback Effort Falls Short in 6-5 Loss

 WORCESTER, Mass. – Deyvison De Los Santos reached base four times and Joe Mack homered on Saturday, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s comeback effort came up short in a 6-5 loss to the Worcester Red Sox from Polar Park. The Red Sox (63-61, 22-28) jumped on Jumbo Shrimp (75-49, 28-21) starter Morgan McSweeney (3-1) early on. Mikey Romero singled and Trayce Thompson walked with two outs in the firth. Nathan Hickey followed with an RBI single to put Worcester in front 1-0. Seby Zavala started the second with a walk before Chadwick Tromp singled. Thanks to a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, there were runners on second and third with two outs. An infield single for Kristian Campbell coupled with an error brought in both runners to widen the gap to 3-0. Thompson began the third with a single. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Drop Series Opener to Durham

JACKSONVILLE – Matt Mervis smacked a home run, but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Durham Bulls 7-1, contest from VyStar Ballpark. Locked in a scoreless tie, Dominic Keegan walked to leadoff the second for Durham (33-25). He advanced to second on a wild pitch, scoring two batters later on an RBI single from Tristan Peters giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Leading by a run, Kenny Piper reached on an error and Chandler Simpson singled to start the fifth. With runners at the corners, Ha-Seong Kim smacked a sacrifice fly, extending the Durham lead to two. The Bulls’ bats stayed hot in the sixth. A Bob Seymour single, coupled with a Keegan fielder’s choice, gave the Bulls two baserunners to start the frame.   JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp have promoted long-time employee Brian DeLettre to Director of Production. A native of Jacksonville, DeLettre’s sports career began with the Jacksonville Suns in 1998. Over more than 25 years with the Jacksonville baseball franchise, DeLettre’s roles have included bat boy, clubhouse assistant, playground coordinator, usher, box office assistant, official scorer and media relations assistant. He joined the full-time staff in 2013. As the Director of Production, DeLettre oversees all aspects of the HD videoboard displays installed at VyStar Ballpark. He also helps manage www.jaxshrimp.com, supervises the press box staff, designs the digital publications and sells season and group ticket packages. DeLettre earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education with emphasis in sports administration from Jacksonville University, where he worked in the athletic media relations office from 2005 to 2013. MLB: Lopez to begin rehab assignment with Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE – Miami Marlins infielder Otto Lopez will begin an injury rehabilitation assignment for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Lopez was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 4 with a right ankle sprain, retroactive to May 3. Thus far in 2025, he has played in 30 games for the Marlins and slashed .229/.294/.330/624, walking 10 times while driving in 11. Born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic before spending part of his childhood in Montreal, Lopez was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays on July 4, 2016 as an international free agent. He played in Toronto’s system before making his major league debut for the Blue Jays on August 17, 2021 in a game against the Washington Nationals. In 2022, Lopez was 6-for-9 at the plate in eight games with Toronto. He played the entirety of the 2023 campaign with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in Western New York, slashing .258/.313/.343/.656 with nine doubles, six triples, two home runs, 35 RBIs, 48 runs and 13 steals in 84 games. ...

Former Jumbo Shrimp Pitcher Elvis Alvarado Makes MLB Debut

  JACKSONVILLE - Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado made his major league debut Friday for the Athletics against the New York Yankees at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. Alvarado came out of the bullpen and worked 1.2 innings with two strikeouts, though the A’s lost 10-2 to the Yankees. A member of the 2024 Jumbo Shrimp, Alvarado appeared in 39 games for Jacksonville last season, going 3-4 with a 2.79 ERA. Over 48.1 innings, he ceded just 33 hits (6.1 H/9) and struck out 71 (13.2 K/9). Following the season, Alvarado signed a major league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was designated for assignment on January 29 and claimed the next day by the A’s. Originally signed by the Washington Nationals in 2015 as an outfielder, Alvarado made his professional debut in 2017 before transitioning to the mound for the 2018 season.   JACKSONVILLE – A quality start from Valente Bellozo and a late RBI knock from Deyvison De Los Santos secured a 3-2 win for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp against the Gwinnett Stripers, Wednesday night at VyStar Ballpark. Locked in a 2-2 tie in the seventh, Maximo Acosta and Joe Mack worked back-to-back two out walks for Jacksonville (17-6). With runners at first and second, De Los Santos cracked an RBI single, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-2 lead against Gwinnett (10-12).  The Jumbo Shrimp broke the scoreless tie in the first. With one out, Acosta walked, and Mack smoked a double. With two runners on, De Los Santos scored Acosta on an RBI groundout, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 1-0 lead. Jumbo Shrimp Alumnus Monteverde Makes MLB Debut

  JACKSONVILLE – Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp left-handed pitcher Patrick Monteverde made his major league debut Saturday for the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Monteverde came out of the bullpen for the Marlins, striking out four in 3.2 innings of work in the Marlins’ 11-10 defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies. A native of Pittsburgh, Monteverde began his collegiate career in 2017 at Division III Virginia Wesleyan. He transferred to Division II Seton Hill for three seasons before transferring to Texas Tech for the 2021 season, when he pitched to a 7-4 record and 3.75 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 86.1 innings. Miami selected Monteverde in the eighth round of the 2021 draft. The southpaw reached Triple-A Jacksonville for the first time in 2023. He pitched in 19 games, including 15 starts, with the Jumbo Shrimp between 2023-25, posting a 6-5 record and 71 strikeouts against 38 walks in 88.0 innings. Jacksonville Walked off by Memphis Saturday Afternoon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite clubbing three home runs, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp couldn’t outlast the Memphis Redibrds in a 6-5 walk off loss Saturday afternoon at AutoZone Park. Tied at five, Memphis (10-8) got a one-out double from Bryan Torres. Two batters later, Matt Koperniak doubled off (14-6) reliever Matt Pushard (L, 0-1) scoring Torres sealing the Redbirds’ Walk off win The Redbirds opened the scoring in the bottom of the first.  MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Home runs from Maximo Acosta and Agustín Ramírez along with strong pitching performances aided the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s 4-1 win over the Memphis Redbirds Thursday night at AutoZone Park. After trading scoreless frames, Jacksonville (13-5) took the lead in the top of the third. With one out, Acosta (2) crushed a solo homer off Memphis (9-7) starter Alex Cornwell (L, 1-1).  JACKSONVILLE – Strong relief pitching was not enough for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in their 7-1 loss t the Worcester Red Sox, Friday night from VyStar Ballpark, in front of 6,101 fans. Worcester (3-3) wasted no time scoring in game four. Roman Anthony led off the first inning with a single. Following a popout, Marcelo Mayer walked and Vaughn Grissom singled.  With the bases juiced, Blake Sabol cracked a two-run double which gave the Woo Sox an early lead.  NASHVILLE – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp struggled Friday in a 7-1 loss to the Nashville Sounds from First Horizon Park. After a quiet start to the night for both team, the Sounds (1-0) jumped on the scoreboard in the third. Garrett Spain laced a double with one out before Caleb Durbin knocked a two-run home run off Jumbo Shrimp (0-1) starter Janson Junk for the season’s first runs. Jacksonville scored its lone run of the game in the fifth. Heriberto Hernandez led off with a base hit against Nashville starter Carlos Rodriguez (1-0) before an error put runners on the corners. Jumbo Shrimp Make Offseason Additions to Staff

 JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp have announced the hiring of four new front office members in preparation for the 2025 season. A’Niya Sconiers has joined the club as an accounting supervisor. Abby Decker is the Jumbo Shrimp’s new promotions coordinator. Lindsay Plymale has been hired as an account executive. Michael Giovingo will serve as the team’s assistant groundskeeper. Sconiers joined the Jumbo Shrimp in October 2024 as the club’s accounting supervisor. She helps to oversee the team’s accounting work. A native of Harlem, N.Y., Sconiers comes to Jacksonville after stints with the Tampa Bay Rays (separate roles as accounting coordinator & ticket sales representative) and Washington Commanders (inside sales representative).  In each of those roles, she set up many outreaches to give back to local Hispanic and military communities, as well as to youth organizations in the sport of dance. Marlins Send Chargois and Hoeing to Jacksonville on Rehab Assignment

JACKSONVILLE  – Miami Marlins’ right-handers JT Chargois and Bryan Hoeing will begin injury rehabilitation assignments for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp this week, when they take on the Gwinnett Stripers from Coolray Field. Chargois appeared in 46 games in 2023 for Miami. The righty was slated to be a part of the Marlins 2024 Opening Day roster before a neck injury placed him on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to March 25). After making a rehab stint with Jacksonville from April 21-27, Chargois was placed on the 60-day injured list on May 12.   A native of Sulphur, La., the Marlins acquired Chargois and Xavier Edwards on November 15, 2022 in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Marcus Johnson and Santiago Suarez. Chargois appeared in 46 games with Miami last season, going 1-0 with a 3.61 ERA in 42.1 innings. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Stifled in Shutout Against RailRiders

Special to Florida Sports Wire JACKSONVILLE  –   Braxton Garrett  tossed five shutout innings but the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders 5-0 Wednesday at 121 Financial Ballpark.  With the game scoreless in the sixth, Everson Pereira and T.J. Rumfield singled with one out. Following a strikeout, Luis Torrens laced a double that scored Pereira. Rumfield was thrown out at home by Griffin Conine, which limited the damage for the Jumbo Shrimp (16-13).   The game remained close into the eighth inning, but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (19-9) began to pull away. Brandon Lockridge singled to lead off the inning.  Two batters later, Pereira singled, which put runners at first and third. Jumbo Shrimp Take First Home Series with 8-4 Victory over Norfolk

  J ACKSONVILLE – Tristan Gray  and  Marty Costes  each blasted a home run as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp notched an 8-4 win over the Norfolk Tides for their first home series win of the season Sunday afternoon at 121 Financial Ballpark. With the game tied at four, the Jacksonville (12-9) took control in the sixth. With one out,  Troy Johnston  doubled and  Jonah Bride  reached on a fielding error charged to Norfolk (9-12) first baseman  Coby Mayo . Jacksonville Shrimp Alumnus Muñoz Debuts for Marlins

JACKSONVILLE   –   Former Jacksonville Jumbo Shirmp right-handed pitcher Roddery Muñoz made his MLB debut Saturday for the Miami Marlins against the Chicago Cubs in game two of the doubleheader. Muñoz is the 997th player to don both a Jacksonville uniform and play in the major leagues, including the 160th former Jumbo Shrimp. The history of minor league baseball in Jacksonville dates back to 1904.    Muñoz started the finale of the doubleheader at Wrigley Field. The right hander hurled five innings of two-run ball, surrendering two hits and striking out seven Cubs hitters.   The Marlins received Muñoz on December 20, 2023 in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
