Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Come Away with Extra Inning Win

NASHVILLE (www.sportsdayjax.com) – After seeing their late lead disappear, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were able to emerge with a 10-9 win over the Nashville Sounds in 10 innings Saturday night.

In the top of the tenth, Jacksonville (42-52, 10-10) brought in the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Jake Mangum began the inning as the ghost runner on second and went to third on a single from Jacob Amaya. Amaya stole second and Xavier Edwards brought in Mangum with a sac fly to give the Jumbo Shrimp a 10-9 lead.

 

With the tying run at third, Dylan Bice (S, 2) got Josh VanMeter to ground out to second, securing Jacksonville’s win.

 

The Jumbo Shrimp started off by drawing first blood in the top of the first. With one out, Amaya doubled and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Austin Allen.

 

The lead grew for Jacksonville in the top of the third. With one out, Amaya walked and went to second on a single by Edwards. Two batters later, Peyton Burdick was hit by a pitch and Jordan Groshans knocked a two-run single giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-0 advantage.

 

Nashville (51-42, 11-8) came storming back batting around their order and plating five runs. Cam Devanney led off with a walk and Monte Harrison (2) blasted a two-run homer cutting the deficit to 3-2. Luis Urias followed with a single and VanMeter (4) smacked another two-run home run, putting the Sounds in front 4-3. Abraham Toro doubled and then scored on a single by Alex Jackson giving Nashville a 5-3 lead.

 

After two scoreless innings, Jacksonville regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Jerar Encarnacion reached on a fielding error charged to Nashville short stop Devanney. Charles Leblanc (7) followed with a two-run homer, tying the game at five. Mangum doubled two batters later and scored on a two-out error by Sounds second baseman Patrick Dorrian, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 6-5 lead.

 

In the eighth inning, Nashville tied the game in the eighth inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch.

 

Three runs crossed the plate for Jacksonville in the top of the ninth. Edwards led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error by Sounds catcher, Jackson. Two batters later, Burdick reached on a fielder’s choice and Edwards snuck under the tag at home to put the Jumbo Shrimp ahead 7-6. Burdick stole second and then scored on a two-out single by Jerar Encarnacion, pushing the lead to 8-6. Leblanc walked and C.J. Hinojosa knocked a base hit, scoring Encarnacion for a 9-6 Jumbo Shrimp advantage.

 

Nashville tied the game again in the bottom of the ninth, down to their final out. VanMeter walked and Jackson singled with one out. Naquin drew a walk to load the bases and with two outs, Dorrian cleared the bases with a three-run double.

 

Jacksonville and Nashville wrap up their series Sunday at 7:05 p.m. ET. The Jumbo Shrimp hand the ball to LHP Enmanuel De Jesus (3-3, 5.72 ERA) and the Sounds will counter with RHP Justin Jarvis (0-1, 7.71 ERA).
