Three Hurricanes Competing at 2024 World Rowing Championships

CORAL GABLES - Three members of the University of Miami rowing team are slated to compete at the 2024 World Rowing Championships in St Catharines, Canada this week, marking a program record for the most participants at the event.

The three Canes set to compete this week include returnee Naroa Zubimendi who will be competing in the U23 World Championships, and a pair of incoming freshmen in Sara Caterisano and Candela Martinez Pernas. Caterisano will be taking part in the U19 World Championships, while Perinas has already begun competing at the U23 World Championships.

“We are very proud of all our athletes who try out for their country’s national teams,” said Head Coach James Mulcahy. “That shows an incredible commitment to their sport, and they are role models for their teammates. For Naroa, Candela, and Sarah, who are racing now, we want them to know that everyone here at Miami is excited for them to have this opportunity and we love to watch their races and cheer them on.”

Pernas, a native of Spain, competed in the U23 Women’s Four on Sunday, helping Spain earn a second-place finish in the first heat of the day. Pernas will compete in the Semifinal round on Thursday afternoon.

Zubimendi will be representing her home country of Spain in the U23 Women’s Pair event, alongside Emma Alimbau Borras. The duo will compete in Heat 1 on Tuesday morning, aiming to advance to the finals which are scheduled to take place Thursday morning.

Caterisano, a native of Italy, is slated to compete in two events at the U19 Championships, beginning with the Women’s Four on Thursday morning. Shortly after competing in the Women’s Four, she is then scheduled to compete in the Women’s Eight.
