Moeller: Do Jaguars View Lawrence-Coen Connection as a Perfect Fit?

JACKSONVILLE - Trade Trevor Lawrence?

At first mention, it seems unthinkable.

But there have been some tires kicked surrounding the fourth-year quarterback, especially with a number of teams seeking someone under center.

Lawrence has been linked to the Steelers, and those rumors persist. He also reportedly has been in the scope of the Giants and Jets.

Jaguars officials quickly and flatly denied any trade talk for the once viewed generational player.

With new head coach and former Bucs’ offensive guru Liam Coen in place, the Jags have viewed the Lawrence-Coen connection as a perfect fit. The Jags confirmed their stance with Lawrence’s five-year, $275 million deal.

The Jags finally have a general manager in 34-year-old James Gladstone, who brings a Rams’ pedigree to Florida with him. Don’t forget Jags longtime mainstay Tony Boselli, who is now the team’s VP of football operations.

It’s a revamped regime in place, and one of their main focuses will be on Lawrence.

Still, there are plenty of mixed feelings about Lawrence.

Many believed Lawrence never reached his potential under Urban Meyer and Doug Pederson and their coordinators. Lawrence also has battled through some injuries the past two seasons after he appeared ready to live up to his generational player tag in 2022.

For the new Jags’ trifecta, it will be about putting the right pieces around Lawrence. It seems like a longshot that they would deal him, but anything is possible.

The Jags have approximately $30 million to spend, and their biggest cap hits are wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram. Kirk has been recently rumored to be headed elsewhere for 2025.

What Lawrence really needs is a sense of creative stability, which the Jags thought they had with Pederson. But the ex-Eagles’ boss couldn’t create the right environment for him.

The Lawrence trade scenarios will again gain some steam with the free agent signing period ready to begin in the next two weeks along with the NFL draft on its heels.

However, this appears to be Lawrence’s shot for a fresh start under a totally new look.

It could also be Jags’ management last shot to prove that they drafted a generational player by providing him the players he needs to succeed.
