USF Men's Basketball Head Coach Hodgson Accepts Providence Job

TAMPA – The University of South Florida men's basketball team announced today that head coach Bryan Hodgson has accepted the head men's basketball coaching position at Providence.

In his lone season in Tampa, Hodgson delivered the most successful campaign in program history. South Florida tied the program record for wins, posting a 25-8 record, captured the American Conference regular season and tournament championships — earning two new banners for the Yuengling Center rafters — and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

"Coach said he would come and win championships, and he delivered on that promise by leading the most successful season in the history of our program," said CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins. "This year's team earned not one, but two championship banners for the Yuengling Center rafters, and we're forever grateful to our student-athletes, Coach Hodgson, his family, and his staff. We did everything within reason to try to retain Coach for the long term. Rest assured, we could not be more excited about the future of USF Men's Basketball. All Gas. No Brakes."

Hodgson, 37, was named USF's 12th head coach on March 24, 2025, after back-to-back 20-win seasons at Arkansas State, where he also guided the Red Wolves to their first postseason appearance since 1999. He previously served as an assistant coach at Alabama and Buffalo.

At USF, Hodgson quickly established an identity built on defensive intensity and player development, assembling a deep roster — including key pieces Izaiyah Nelson, Joseph Pinion, and Wes Enis — and molding them into a championship unit. The regular-season conference title was the program's second in three years; the Tournament title was its first in 36 years.

The team broke numerous program records, including single-season total points scored, points per game, three-point field goals made, free throws made, and road wins.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead South Florida Basketball," Hodgson said. "Deciding to leave is not easy. This place, these people, and this program mean a great deal to me. My hope is that we left it better than we found it, that we delivered on the vision we shared, and laid a foundation that will continue to grow. South Florida will always hold a special place in our hearts."

South Florida will immediately begin a national search for its 13th head coach.
