MBB: Miami's Rodriguez Hits Five 3-pointers as Hurricanes Upset Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla --Angel Rodriguez was unstoppable down the stretch, scoring Miami-Florida's final 11 points in a 69-67 upset of the eighth-ranked Florida Gators.

Rodriguez made one of his five 3-pointers with 16 seconds left to give the Hurricanes a 68-67 lead. After taking a charge at the other end of the court, he made 1-of-2 free throws with 2.3 seconds remaining. 

Michael Frazier II missed a jumper at the buzzer.

Rodriguez ended with 24 points and Miami snapped Florida's 33-game home winning streak.

GAME NOTES:
Miami’s last road win over a Top 10 team was Feb. 5, 2012 at No. 7/5 Duke (78-74, OT).

-The Canes snap Florida’s 24 game win streak in non-conference home games at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.

-Miami’s last road win over a ranked team was Feb. 2, 2013 at No. 19 NC State (79-78).

-Miami is 48-135 overall against ranked teams with a 14-63 mark on the road.

-Starters: Angel Rodriguez, Manu Lecomte, Sheldon McClellan, Joe Thomas and Tonye Jekiri.

-Miami's game against Florida was the first of an 11-day roadtrip where the Canes play five games in nine days in three states.

-High scorer: Angel Rodriguez scored 24 points his first twenty-point game as a Cane, also topping his previous collegiate career-high. His previous career-high was 22 points against Baylor (2/16/13) when he played for Kansas State.

-High rebounder: Tonye Jekiri grabbed eight rebounds.

-Omar Sherman scored his first points of his collegiate career on a lay-up and foul at the 10:10 mark in the first half.

-Freshman James Palmer had his first double figure scoring game of his collegiate career with 10 points.

-Sheldon McClellan ties his career high in assists with three.

The Canes came back with a 14-1 run which included 3-straight three-pointers by Angel Rodriquez with 5 minutes left in the game.

-Omar Sherman made a three point shot and a block shot to pull the Canes within 1 with 3:48 left in the game.

-Tonye Jekiri tied the game with a free throw and then took a 56-55 leadat the 3:48 mark, which was Miami’s first lead of the game. Miami was down by 14 at the 9:46 mark.

-Eight different Canes scored in the first half.

-Miami was 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line in the last five minutes of the game.

-Miami shot 65.2 percent from the field and 70 percent from the three-point line in the second half.
   
-Against ranked teams since the arrival of Coach Larrañaga in 2011, Miami is 6-14 overall, 3-6 on the road and 2-1 in regular season non-conference matchups.

-Miami is now 23-45 in the series against Florida, which dates back to the 1927-28 season. The Hurricanes are 7-29 on the road against the Gators. Since the rebirth of UM basketball in 1985, Miami is 3-9 against UF, and under Coach L, Miami is now 1-0.
  
-Miami is now 2-2 in the last four matchups with the Gators. The Canes’ last win over the Gators was Dec. 4, 2004, a 72-65 victory in Gainesville.

-Head coach Jim Larrañaga has a 538-370 overall record in his 31st season as a head coach. He is 68-36 in his third season at the University of Miami.
