Flagler Scores Late Hoal to Upset No. 21 Clayton State

MORROW, Ga.  (Florida Sports Wire) – Marcus Hedemann scored the game-winning goal with 4:06 left in regulation as Flagler College knocked off No. 21 (United Soccer Coaches Top 25) Clayton State University 2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship match Sunday evening at Laker Field.

Flagler is 4-0-2 in its last six matches and improved its overall record to 12-4-3. This was the Saints third league tournament title and first since the spring of 2021. It was Flagler’s first win in Morrow, Georgia since Oct. 6, 2018. The Lakers had their 11-match unbeaten (10-0-1) streak snapped and dropped to 12-3-3. The last time Clayton State lost at home was Sept. 21, 2022 when it lost to Lander University, 1-0. That was a span of 21 matches.

Up next for the Saints is the NCAA Division II Tournament as they earned the league’s automatic berth. Clayton State will have to wait and see if it receives an at-large berth. The field be announced tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.

Jackson Kirila served the ball into the box and a Clayton State player extended his foot out to deflect it, but the ball dropped to a streaking Hedemann. A quick flick from his right foot found the back of the net as the Clayton State goalkeeper was frozen.

Joshua Fox, named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored the equalizer in the 80th minute as he headed in Max Gottwald’s free kick. Reiss Skeen, Gustav Moberg, and Hedemann earned spots on the all-tournament team.

Ryan Rivas finished with three saves for the Saints and Mauricio Uribe had one save for the Lakers.

Clayton State out-shot Flagler 9-5 and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
