Flagler Notebook: Stella Jelinek named to WGCA All-South Region Team

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (www.sportsdayjax.com)– Flagler College freshman Stella Jelinek was selected to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-South Region Team according to a release this afternoon.

The Leimen, Germany native was one of 12 players selected to the all-region team and was the lone golfer from the Peach Belt Conference. 

Jelinek was the PBC’s Player and Freshman of the Year and took home first-team all-conference honors. She broke the program record for best scoring average in a season (74.26) and her won-lost percentage (.858) was second in the program’s history. 

Jelinek is currently ranked No. 8 by Golfstat and had peaked at No. 2 earlier this spring. She had seven top five finishes this year and won one tournament. Jelinek was the PBC Golfer of the Week on four different occasions.

Mason Gray earns academic all-district honors

 Flagler College sophomore infielder/outfielder Mason Gray was selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District NCAA Division II team, released by officials on May 16.

Gray is the eighth baseball player to earn this academic honor and the first since 2020 (Aaron Anderson).

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Gray is a business administration major at Flagler. He holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.98. The Lake City, Florida native played in 26 games with 25 starts before suffering a season-ending injury. He led the team with a .347 batting average as he had 35 hits, five doubles, 15 runs batted in, and he scored 18 runs. Gray also stole seven bases, had four sacrifice hits, and two sacrifice flies. 

Gray is now eligible for CSC Academic All-America® honors.

Five Saints earn academic all-district honors

 

The Flagler College softball team had five of its members selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® team, according to a release Tuesday. Ari Bosch, Madelyn Childs, Olivia Parker, Courtney Robinson, and Madelyn Wise were all honored.  

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, and have played in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position listed on the nomination form. 

No athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.  

Bosch, a sophomore utility player, is a psychology major who holds a 3.53 cumulative grade point average. 

She finished the year with a .291 batting average. The Winter Garden, Florida native collected 16 hits, including two doubles and one home run. Bosch drove in five runs and scored eight more. She was a Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll Silver Scholar last year.Childs, a sophomore catcher, is a sociology major who has a 3.92 GPA and graduated summa cum laude a couple of weeks ago. 

She transferred from Pensacola (Fla.) State College where she played two years, but due to COVID, those years did not count against her athletic eligibility. The Port Orange, Florida native batted .259 with one home run and had 15 runs batted in. She collected 21 hits, including a pair of doubles. Childs earned PBC Presidential Honor Roll Gold Scholar honors as well as being a D2 ADA award recipient last year.   Parker, a sophomore first baseman, is a psychology major with a minor in biology. She has a 3.58 GPA. The Perry, Georgia native collected 23 hits with six doubles, one home run, 16 RBI, and she scored 11 runs. Parker was a PBC Presidential Honor Roll Silver Scholar last year.Robinson, a junior second base/utility player, is a psychology and criminology double major. She graduated cum laude with a 3.55 GPA. The Gainesville, Florida native collected 18 hits with four doubles, one home run, 13 RBI and she scored 11 runs. Robinson earned academic all-conference honors last year and is a two-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll Bronze Scholar.Wise, a junior pitcher, is a psychology major with a minor in criminology. She graduated cum laude with a 3.54 GPA. The Edgefield, South Carolina native went 4-5 in the circle with three saves and a staff-best 2.45 earned run average. She also led the staff with 65 strikeouts. Wise is a two-time academic all-conference selection, a two-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll scholar, and a recipient of the D2 ADA award.All five are now eligible for CSC Academic All-America® honors.
