SEC: Five Gators Named to 2014 AP All-SEC Football Teams
GAINESVILLE, Fla.-The 2014 Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference football team was released on Monday.
Five Florida Gators were included on the three teams, as sophomore Vernon Hargreaves III was named to the First Team Defense for the second consecutive year, senior Kyle Christy and junior Antonio Morrison were named to the Second Team Defense and redshirt senior Andre Debose and junior Dante Fowler, Jr. received offensive and defensive Honorable Mention nods, respectively.
Hargreaves totaled 45 tackles on the season, with two interceptions and a league-leading 13 passes broken up, besting his record-setting 11 pass break ups recorded last season, which equaled the most by a true freshman in school history, matching the total Janoris Jenkins had in 2008.
Christy ended the regular season ranked 12th in the nation and 4th in the SEC in average yards per punt (44.4). 20 of Christy's 57 punts this season soared for 50 yards or more, including four of 60-plus yards. His 43.8 career yardage average across 173 punts places him second on UF's all-time list behind Ray Criswell who recorded a 44.4 yard average during his career between 1982 and 1985.
Morrison proved to be a powerhouse for the Florida defense. He totaled a team-leading 98 tackles, good for fifth in the SEC, and recorded an interception for 20 yards, one pass break up and one forced fumble. He made a career-high 16 stops against South Carolina in his sixth game with 10 or more tackles on the season.
Debose recorded his first career punt return touchdown against LSU and is tied for third all-time in the SEC with 5 combined return scores. He owns the Florida record with four kick return touchdowns, and closed his career ranked 6th in the nation and second in the SEC in average yards per punt return (14.0).
Fowler led the Gators with 12 tackles for loss and ranked second on the team with 5.5 sacks. In 2014, he notched 57 tackles, two forced fumbles, one pass break up and one fumble recovery.
